In 2025, Encounter Theatre proudly launches Stories Begin Here—an innovative new program designed to inspire, educate, and support playwrights and dramaturgs from diverse cultural backgrounds across Western Australia.

With six tailored streams for writers at different stages of their careers, the program builds a vital pipeline for new talent through workshops, mentorship, and reading opportunities. In partnership with Black Swan State Theatre Company, The Blue Room Theatre, and Centre for Stories, Stories Begin Here unites leading artists and communities to spark a bold new era of storytelling in WA.

    For beginners and community members new to writing: Welcoming weekly sessions designed to build confidence and creative skills in a flexible, supportive environment.

  2. Play Reading Group

    For emerging and community writers: A space to engage with dramatic literature through shared reading and discussion, fostering deeper storytelling knowledge.

  3. Introduction To Playwriting

    For emerging playwrights: An intensive workshop offering foundational tools and guidance for those beginning their playwriting journey. Open now.

  4. Screenwriting Group

    For emerging and early-career screenwriters: Workshops focused on developing authentic storytelling and strong narrative craft for the screen.

  5. Dramaturgy Development Group

    For mid-career artists and theatre-makers: Keynote sessions led by national and international dramaturgs, delivered online to ensure broad access and professional development.

  6. New Horizons

    For experienced playwrights: Mentorship and artistic support for three WA writers developing ambitious new works.
