Work with Us | Communications & Marketing

Communications & Marketing Officer

Encounter is looking for a creative Communications & Marketing Officer to help share our work with audiences, artists, communities and the wider arts sector.

This is a hands-on role across marketing, digital content, audience engagement and publicity. You’ll help shape how people discover ENCOUNTER, our artists and the stories behind our work.

You’ll be joining a small, collaborative team where everyone plays an important part in bringing things to life. We’re looking for someone who enjoys variety, can work independently, and is as comfortable writing a great Instagram caption as they are coordinating a campaign or talking with an artist.

This role supports the coordination, delivery, and reporting of marketing campaigns across development programs, performances and annual program activities.

About us

ENCOUNTER is a Boorloo based theatre company creating contemporary performance through intercultural collaboration, artist development and community participation. Our mission is to create theatre that builds belonging in an increasingly divided world. Our vision is for stages where contemporary Australia can imagine itself in new ways.

We are committed to a diverse, inclusive, and culturally safe workplace and strongly encourage applications from First Nations people, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, LGBTQIA+ individuals, people with disabilities, and those with diverse lived experiences.

About the role

Working closely with the Business Manager, Artistic Director and creative teams, you will:

  • Develop and deliver marketing campaigns for Encounter’s productions, programs and activities.

  • Write engaging copy that captures the artistic, cultural and community dimensions of our work.

  • Help develop and roll out communications plans that map out how we connect with audiences across our annual season and individual projects.

  • Create and schedule content across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok and other digital channels.

  • Keep our website and e-newsletters fresh, accessible and engaging.

  • Help grow and connect with our audiences, with a focus on access, inclusion and meaningful engagement.

  • Develop relationships with media, arts and community contacts and look for opportunities to share our work more widely.

  • Coordinate photography, video, advertising, print materials and other promotional content.

  • Work with artists, designers, venues, partners and suppliers to bring campaigns and stories together.

  • Help maintain Encounter’s visual identity and voice across our communications.

  • Play a hands-on support role in a brand and website review, helping shape how Encounter looks and connects online.

  • Use audience feedback and digital insights to understand what is working and help shape what we do next.

  • Contribute to organisational communications, funding applications and reporting where relevant.

This is a broad, practical role. Some weeks might involve building a campaign for a new production; others might be spent creating social content, updating the website, talking to a photographer or finding new ways to reach an audience.

About you

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has around 3–5 years’ experience in marketing, communications, digital content or a related field.

  • Is a strong writer who can adapt their voice for different audiences and platforms.

  • Has experience managing social media, websites and email marketing.

  • Can turn creative ideas and information into engaging stories and content.

  • Is organised, reliable and comfortable juggling several projects and deadlines.

  • Enjoys working collaboratively with artists, creatives, community members and other stakeholders.

  • Can take initiative and get things done without needing everything mapped out for them.

  • Has an interest in theatre, the arts and the communities we work with.

  • Understands that good arts marketing is about more than selling tickets, it’s about helping people find a way into the work.

  • Has a Working with Children Check, or willingness to obtain one.

Experience in the arts, cultural, community or not-for-profit sector is highly valued, but we’re also interested in people who bring relevant experience from other creative environments.

Desirables

Experience with some of the following:

  • Design tools (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite)

  • Website and email marketing platforms (e.g. Squarespace, Mailchimp)

  • Digital analytics (Google Analytics, Meta Insights)

  • Audience and community development

  • Photography, video and content creation

  • Media relations and publicity

  • Access and inclusion in arts and cultural communications

  • Grant writing and funding reports

  • More than one language

You don't need to tick every box. We’re interested in what you can bring, how you think, and how you might contribute to Encounter.
